Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and West Milford Chief of Police Shannon Sommerville announce that based upon an investigation by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, in conjunction with the West Milford Police Department, Donovan Kelly, a 28-year-old male from Hewitt, New Jersey, has been charged in connection to the May 31, 2026, fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the area of Warwick Turnpike and Lake Shore Drive in Hewitt. Donovan Kelly is charged with Third Degree Causing Death While Driving with a Suspended License.
On May 31, 2026, at approximately 5:55 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred in the area of Warwick Turnpike and Lake Shore Drive in Hewitt, New Jersey. The collision involved a Dodge Charger and a Nissan Pathfinder. The driver of the Dodge Charger, a 30-year-old male from Bardonia, New York, was medevacked to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center. He succumbed to his injuries on June 1, 2026, and was pronounced deceased. Based on the investigation, detectives determined that Donovan Kelly was driving the Nissan Pathfinder with a suspended license.
Donovan Kelly was charged and processed on July 31, 2026, without incident.
Third Degree Causing Death While Driving with a Suspended License has a sentencing range between 3 and 5 years in state prison.
Criminal complaints are merely accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
