Arrest Made in November 10, 2023 Paterson Homicide

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Patrick Murray announce that based upon an investigation by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, in conjunction with the Paterson Police Department, Joshua Perez, a 38- year-old male from Paterson, New Jersey, has been charged in connection to the November 10, 2023 fatal shooting that occurred in the area of Park Avenue and Straight Street in Paterson. Joshua Perez is charged with Murder, first degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, second degree; and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second degree.

On November 10, 2023, at approximately 12:44 a.m., members of the Paterson Police Department were dispatched to the area of Park Avenue and Straight Street in Paterson, New Jersey on a reported shooting. Officers located the victim, a 33-year-old male from Paterson, with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center where he was subsequently pronounced deceased. During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that Joshua Perez was the shooter. He was later located in Florida and extradited to New Jersey on September 2, 2025.

The State has filed a motion for pretrial detention against Joshua Perez which will be heard by a Superior Court judge at a date and time to be determined by the court.

The crime of Murder has a sentencing range from a minimum of 30 years up to life imprisonment; the crimes of Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Handgun each have a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in prison.
