Sussex County Community College Offerings in September

The Center for Lifelong Learning at Sussex County Community College (SCCC), a collaboration between the Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services and Sussex County Community College, is hosting free presentations during the month of September.

Free Lecture: “The Wives of Henry the VIII.” Join Dr. Robyn Muir in the Atrium of the Performing Arts Center at SCCC on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., for an in depth look at the six wives of Henry VIII.

Free Certificate Program: Become a Community Journalist in Your Hometown. For the second year in a row, the Center has received a grant to continue offering a free Community Journalist Certificate program. This program will offer a hands-on exploration of how journalism works. This class will be available in-person and online beginning September 23, 2025. The in-person workshops will meet on eight (8) consecutive Tuesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Media Center on the SCCC campus behind Building “D”. The online version of the certificate course is available asynchronously. Participants should be computer savvy and have access to the internet and email.

Free Workshop: “Explore Alcohol Ink Painting.” Join Professor Sherry Fitzgerald, on either Thursday, September 25, or Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the Art Gallery, Room C202 (located by the entrance to the “B” Building) at SCCC, to explore alcohol ink painting. During this free two (2) hour beginner friendly workshop, you will explore the basics of this fun medium. The workshop will start with technique experimentation to understand how alcohol inks interact while designing a bookmark. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to create and take home a unique and colorful abstract art piece on special alcohol ink paper, called yupo paper. Materials will be provided. Attendees should park behind the Horton Mansion or in the main parking lot at the entrance to the campus.

Hands on Learning: Introduction to Drawing. This five-part class will emphasize the development of observational drawing skills and hand-eye coordination. Basic drawing elements such as line, proportion, perspective, composition, texture, and the study of light and shade are investigated through various perceptual and conceptual approaches. Professor Michael Hughes is a practicing artist and member of the Fine Arts Faculty at SCCC. Classes will take place in the Art Gallery, Room C105 (located by the entrance to the “B” Building) at 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays: September 27, October 4, October 11, October 18 and October 25, 2025. The cost of the course is $30.00. Students are required to bring their own drawing supplies. Basic tools should include a large newsprint pad and a very basic drawing kit containing charcoal pencils, graphite drawing pencils, charcoal sticks and an eraser. Space is limited. Attendees should park behind the Horton Mansion or in the main parking lot at the entrance to the campus.
