Chemistry Club, ages 7-10

Registration Required

Students from Bergen County Technical High School's student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Chemistry Club want to share their love of chemistry with younger students. These local teens are volunteering their time and expertise in chemistry to teach children ages 7 to 10 how chemical reactions can be interesting, fun, and exciting!

Please register for each meeting you wish to attend.

Projects:

April 11 - Stained Glass Glue - This experiment will take around 1 hour and will demonstrate the detergent molecules interacting with the food coloring, dispersing it and creating repulsion through the substance.

April 18 - Experimenting with Lava Lamps - Create 'lava' in a jar and learn about how liquids of different densities interact.

May 16 - Chromatography - The Science! Pigments are molecules that give things color. Dyes or inks can be dissolved by specific solvents. If dyes/inks are applied to fabric then a solvent is added Chromatography occurs. As the solvent moves through the cloth, it carries the pigments along with it. Small pigment molecules move faster than big ones, so the colors sometimes separate into their different color components as they move through the cloth. Discover which colors (pigments) are heavier than others as the ink separates.

May 30 - Bouncy Balls - Explore the chemical reactions which create Bouncy Balls.
