ABOUT CLIFTON ANDERSON

Clifton Anderson is considered one of the leading trombonists and composers performing in Jazz today. His performances embody the fertile and varied history of musical experiences he's enjoyed, working with a who's who of musical giants; from Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, Slide Hampton, Lester Bowie and Dee Dee Bridgewater to Stevie Wonder, Keith Richards, Paul Simon and The Mighty Sparrow among many others. He is not only noted for his rich personal sound on the trombone but for his abilities as a composer and musical interpreter.

Clifton was born in Harlem, New York City into a musical family and from an early age showed an affinity for music. At 7 years old he received his first trombone from his uncle, Jazz legend Sonny Rollins. Clifton went on to study at the prestigious Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and is a graduate of The Manhattan School of Music.

In addition to performing and recording in a wide variety of stylized settings, Clifton has also carried his experience and expertise into academia. He has taught at Duke University, Rutgers Summer Jazz Camp, Jazzmobile among other venues and has developed a program for elementary grade levels entitled “We Love Jazz”, which he has presented throughout the New York City Public and Charter school systems.

Clifton joined his uncle’s band in 1983, and performed and recorded with Rollins for over 25 years. Clifton's work with Sonny as a featured soloist and producer is well known and documented. He has appeared on ten of Sonny's recordings and produced three CD's and one DVD for Sonny's Doxy label. In addition Clifton has produced highly successful recordings for other artists; the latest for pianist Tadataka Unno, whose CD went to #1 in Japan.

Clifton's own recordings have each charted in the top ten on Jazz radio in the USA and have continued to be considered among the very best in their category. In 2009 his recording “Decade” led to a nomination for “Trombonist Of The Year”, followed by “And So We Carry On” which was voted “One Of The Top Jazz CD Releases Of 2012” by Jazz Inside Magazine. His latest release “Been Down This Road Before” has been called “An Instant Classic” by music critic Thomas Pena, and was placed on several “Best of 2021 Recordings” lists. The recording is Clifton's response to the injustices and endless racial struggles people of color continue to face in this society and around the world. The video for the release features cameo appearances by Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Danny Glover.

Clifton's latest recording “Some Things Never Change” is a single release on his label What We Do Music. The track features Kenny Garrett, Ray Parker Jr., Steve Jordan, Russel Blake, John F. Adams and Victor See Yuen. The download is available at Bandcamp.com, iTunes, Amazon and is streaming on all major streaming platforms.

Clifton and his stellar sextet have been performing before very enthusiastic and appreciative audiences throughout the USA and Europe for several years and continue to bring a mix of swinging, high energy, melodic and groove based originals and standards to their listeners.
